Graduated in 2019 with a mech BA. Couldn't find a job as an engineer in Tamapa. Everyone wanted me as a technician, but not as an engineer. (20 years as an aircraft technician) I gave up after a year of looking. Worked in HVAC and controls for 3 years....as a technician. Thank God I didn't pay for the degree (GI Bill), but man, what a waste of time. Quit all together and started my own business for 2-3x the pay....as, you guessed, a technician. Corporate America can go blow a goat.

I think too many young able-bodied people are hoping to skip low wage physical labor. They're going from the classroom to the office making 70K. Why? Because they can do math? You should have to physically earn it either through construction experience or military service. We are raising an entire generation of brats while illegals are sliding in to do the physical work. I know of 3 kinds of people for whom an engineering degree might be an ideal choice: 1) People who don't care if they become engineers, want the degree to prove their intelligence (or else just satisfy their curiosity for a few years) and know that they would be satisfied taking it with them into unrelated jobs. For these folks, it helps to have superb social skills and be able to sell oneself into anything in job interviews, even while holding an unrelated diploma. 2) People working as non-degreed engineers, who are obtaining the diploma as a prerequisite to job security or advancement in their companies. 3) Preeminent child geniuses who do things like learn the periodic table of elements at age 4, finish reading Isaac Newton's Principia before age 12, and build hydrogen fusion reactors as teenagers. I mean, youth whose ability to be selected for a technical job before 500 other capable applicants really couldn't be called into question, due to their science resumes even before college. Number 3 shouldn't really be a category, because the degree is even more suitable for a youth in category 3 if the youth is also in category 2 before adulthood. For everyone else, engineering degrees are a dreadful gamble.

There's not a frozen chance in Hell that I would have done an electrical engineering degree if I had known I wouldn't be more hirable afterwards than I was before my freshman year (1998). After my graduation, it took me 14 years and a great deal more college education to find myself in my first full-time professional job. In the USA, NAFTA wrecked the economics of graduating with an engineering degree. NAFTA is one reason why I don't picture myself voting for a Democrat anytime too soon.

Hello Oliver, I am choosing to study mechatronics engineering program at a college in canada, The issue is that as of now its not been accredited by the CEAB(Canadian Engineering Association Board) and they say that they will be eleigible to apply after the first batch of students have graduated. so my question is that Does the accreditation really matter alot? your reply would really help me, I am in a dilemma and i only have 2 days remaining to confirm my place!

The biggest problem is that universities accept too many students who are actually not smart enough to be engineers. I graduated from our city's best high school, where most people's parents have decent positions like engineers, professors, doctors, government officers, and family business owners... After we graduated from college, almost everyone who chose an engineer major found an engineer position. Intelligence is the most hereditary feature of human beings, but lots of people wouldn't admit that...

I was underemployed for 2 years in engineering. We're pushing engineering degrees because conservatives like Daily Wire and Turning Point USA can profit off of videos of them schooling engineering students on college campuses who are being scammed. I've been thinking about this one, and we have a deeper spiritual crisis in the schools where men's lives aren't valued and protected.

I see a lot of advertised engineering positions that want candidates to have ten years experience and know EVERYTHING which is totally unreasonable. Most of my coworkers are highly specialized and struggle acquiring new skills on their own.

I'm very interested in embedded systems but due to limitations, am only able to pursue online schooling at this time. This limits me to a computer science degree, which I am interested in, but may not be the ideal path for this field. After getting my bscs what do you recommend I do next to be better prepared to move into embedded systems? I love electonics & both hardware & software.

Engineering doesn't pay that well when you consider you'll most likely be looking for a new job every 3-4 years as you finish a project and become surplus to requirements. If you do the math, spending a year unemployed for every 3 to 4 you spent working, means your engineering wage paid less than the average unqualified office worker. Basically once you've done what they want, you're just an expensive "attitude problem", one minute you're saying "no you can't build an airplane like that, people will die", next minute you're looking for a new job.

Medical field has higher employment rates than stem. The best degree to get is an MD. Its near 100% employment rate because the american medical association limits the number of MD granting institutions in order to keep the employment rate so high.

Hey! Loved you video, I wanted to ask what you think about a Msc in Engineering Physics and the possibility of entering into the Aersopace sector. I'm between studying an Aeropace master and an Engineering Physics master mostly because I think that an Aerospace master could limit the possibility of working in other fields in the future.

After you graduate go knock on the door of the small companies where they will let you become an engineer, avoid big companies where you will sit in a cubicle farm and only do one thing. Prioritize experience over pay, better money and opportunities will come when you have the experience. Be prepared to spend at least 2 years as a "designer" where you will actually learn to be an engineer. Always be curious, be nice to people you work with even if you don't like them, listen to your manufacturing team and contractors, some of them have really good ideas. Go where the work is.

Software engineer for 1 year over here, I can say that a college degree is absolutely useless. The universities are to be blamed. They bank on you being less skilled so you go back to college and spend more time taking useless classes. I’ve learned a huge chunk of software engineering is on the job. What people need in college is education followed by practical experience. I’ve also learned that it’s not only just coding something but really identify what is the impact of your project. Businesses want to make money, that’s why they hire engineers. If you work on projects that don’t have relevant impact and value to the company, why would they hire you? However universities definitely fail at this because they put you in classes that don’t really provide you relevant skills. I remember being in a class where we worked with low level code. I was just thinking what company is working with technologies like this? What it the chance I’m gonna end up on some legacy project?

I tried getting an apprenticeship as a Millwright, they are just as bad about training and refuse to accept first and sometimes second year apprentices.

In the U.S. the federal gov't employees tens of thousands of people in positions which require an engineering degree to obtain but not perform. This floods the market and retards pay.

@3:25 Employers are unwilling to spend the money to train new graduates!! Many employers believe that graduates are supposed to be *trained specifically for the specific position* they are offering! Some employers believe the world revolves around their place of work!

I sat in on electrical engineering classes at Cal State LA for 10 years. I'm glad I didn't take those classes for real since they cost $1500 each (and tuition is going up 30%) and I'm too old to start a career as an engineer. STEM is supposed to be hot but I suspect that if you want a career in the field you have to be willing to move anywhere. I guess that computer science is flooded now and nobody knows where it's going because of AI. I like one video from a CS student at Carnegie Mellon who said he dropped out after 2 years because it was too stressful and the classes in the 3rd and 4th years were really theoretical and wouldn't help you in a job.

I'm glad that you made this video, because the USA has been dishonest about employment opportunities for several decades. I've pursued STEM degrees and employment since the '70s, and I have some observations about it. I first began noticing a problem when I took a correspondence course for Microcomputer Repair from McGraw-Hill's National Radio Institute. They had advertised that the US would need so many thousands of computer technicians and we were facing a shortfall. Oddly, I had difficulty finding employment. Also, oddly, McGraw-Hill doesn't offer those courses, anymore. Over time, I realized that we had a glut of people who liked tinkering with computers as a hobby, and they were happy having a job that pays them just enough so they can put a roof over their heads and maybe raise a family. It's difficult to compete with that. Next, I got a degree in Laser Electro-Optic Technology. This is a triple degree, a combination degree of lasers, electronics and optics. It required more training, more classes, more credit hours, than any other degree at my junior college apart from Registered Nurse. It was a long and difficult course that gave me hands-on experience with several thousands of dollars worth of laser equipment. I actually worked on and experimented with helium-neon, argon ion, nitrogen, Nd:YAG and semiconductor lasers, and various sensors and measuring tools as part of my degree. In the thirty-two years since I graduated with that degree, I've worked a total of four MONTHS as a laser technician. I tried to find employment as a laser technician for years! I never could, so now I'm a computer technician. Incidentally, both the state university and my junior college discontinued their LEOT degree programs about the time that I graduated. I spent three years earning a degree that makes an interesting hobby, but has been useless for employment. I've wanted to be an engineer and a scientist ever since childhood, so I finally enrolled in a college to pursue an engineering degree. I like all kinds of engineering, but I decided that computer engineering would be the most beneficial for me. In the four semesters in which I was enrolled in a Computer Science and Engineering degree program, I realized, about 1996, that most engineering graduates won't become engineers. All the companies that employ engineers claim that we have a shortfall of engineers, and, since we can't produce enough qualified engineers in the USA, we need to loosen visa restrictions so we can attract foreign engineers. I'm glad that you mentioned that earning an engineering degree costs about $100k, even in Canada. In contrast, an engineering degree in India can cost as little as $20k. Do you see why employers don't want to hire US citizens for engineering jobs? When employers make these claims about not having enough qualified engineers (or qualified anything else), they are lying. They really mean, they can't pay slave wages for these positions, because the education and certifications simply are too expensive when done in the West. That's why all the big tech companies are importing hundreds, even thousands, of foreign tech workers, especially from India. If you are a US citizen, you are competing against a sea of workers who will do your job for half what you could afford to accept. Thirty and more years ago, engineering was considered a high-paying job with a bright future, and lots of young people went into it for that reason. Now, careers in finance or entertainment have taken the place of engineering. Bright, young, ambitious US citizens go to work in finance, not engineering.

Many companies hire engineers for jobs where no actual engineering takes place. I don't think engineers "ditch" engineering, they take a job that requires an engineering degree and then realize they are actually just paper pushers. The lesson for new engineers is that if you want to do engineering do your research to ensure the jobs you apply for are actually for engineering.

I’m not an engineer yet but will be in 2 years. It’s a complicated problem but after talking to a lot of engineers who worked for defense companies the biggest thing is working throughout schooling for those companies and always checking their experience requirements. It’s an individuals responsibility to do everything in their power to get where they want to be and I believe it’s mostly the individuals fault. Companies follow the $. A lot of the old guys say many students they went through and graduated from engineering schools with didn’t get jobs they wanted because throughout the school they went 100% in classroom but didn’t do much work outside of that and needed more time to get started than engineers who knew more about hands on problem solving and applying knowledge so they could hit the ground running a lot sooner and making the company money sooner. Yeah, it's sad that the society doesn't see the prestige in trade jobs. There are a lot of very smart and hard working people working construction and all people think when they see them is that they are less ambitios and therefore lesser than an engineer. If we want a functioning society we need to lift the construction workers prestige!

Worked as an Aerospace Engineer for a couple of years and the pay was crap in the UK even with years of experience, so did the classic and went into financial services and then moved abroad with lower tax so at least I could get ahead. We are problem solvers so use this skill get ahead regardless. It's one of the few degrees that has some value, but I would not get into massive debt for it. When I took my degree it was a fraction of the cost now.

The best way I know to work as an engineer after university is to do engineering-like things before university. Too many people think school will teach them everything they need to know. And it might, if the student is primed to receive everything. _But you have to know the questions to recognize the answers._

I have 3 people in my relatively small friend group that have engineering degrees, one's a software dev, one's a teacher, and only one is working a engineering position
